Many different causes as to why people are literate. People must first realize that there is a value for literacy. As long as one does not see its importance, then they would not mind lacking the ability to read or write. Going to school, teaches people how to read and write. If people do not go to school, they would not learn how to. There are also laws that demand education. For example you need to go to school until you are sixteen years old. By forcing people go to school, this makes people more likely to become literate. People also need to realize that success depends on literacy. If you are unable to read or write, how do you think you will be successful in life? The equality between men and women also provides that more people are literate. Half the world’s population is made up of women. If they are illiterate, that means that half of the population can not communicate to each other through reading or writing.
There are a lot of benefits for a person being literate. People can tell stories to one another by writing them down, as a result other people are able to read those stories. The same is true for history. As a result of people writing books about the past, we know what has happened in the days gone by and learn from their successes and failures. We are able to transcribe skills, procedures and methods. People use read the information, to learn how to do the stuff. Literacy also helps us not be taken in by false claims. It allows you to notice if someone is lying to you. For example, on the television you hear that someone has cured cancer. If you are literate, you would know that this is a false claim because you have read books that have stated otherwise.
Literacy is something that we use everyday without realizing it. Without it, we would not be able to communicate the ideas we have to others. We would have no idea about our past. Literacy is one of the building blocks that we depend on. If we did not have it, we may not be able to advance as a society.
