Retron 3 Interview - Part 2
- Tuesday, 03 August 2010
Does playing on an HDTV really affect the games graphic output?
Yes! The RetroN3 has s-video output and for the SNES and Genesis the graphics are amazing on HDTV. The colors come out crisp, clear and without any ghosting or scan lines. If you played these games as a child using RF to the television you can expect a huge difference in picture quality. The NES unfortunately is too old and will not benefit from a HDTV.
We were told that there is a 4th dial position on the console when only 3 consoles are available. Were you trying to incorporate a 4th device and were not successful?
A fourth device was never seriously considered.
Are gamers able to purchase controllers separately?
If you mean the wireless RetroN3 controllers, then no - we do not have any plans to sell those separately. Although wireless is convenient – we still recommend using original wired controllers.
In regards to the previous question, some of the games supported up to 4 players. Does the RetroN 3 support more than 2 players?
The RetroN3, as far as we know, works with all original accessories. So if you can track down a NES, SNES or Genesis Multitap it will work. Coincidentally, we were played four players on Super Bomberman2 on SNES last night.
The RetroN3 wireless receiver only supports two players.
Compatibility issues with individual cartridges were bound to occur despite our best interest. Each game has a different reason for incompatibility. I do not have a full library available for testing but I can address the various reasons why games may not work.
Lockout Chips:
Super Mario RPG for SNES: this particular game had different production models. Some models were made with and without a lockout chip. There’s other games with lockout chips, a quick search online could tell you which.
Advanced Graphics Chips:
Some games use unique chipsets to accelerate graphic rendering, usually for polygons. A good example of this is Virtua Racing for Genesis or MMC-5, 228 games for NES. We do not apologize for not being able to play Cheetahmen II.
Power:
Information from system to system must travel backwards from the RetroN3’s power supply. We did our best to position the NES cartridges, which have the highest varying demand for power, in the back of the unit but it still wasn’t enough to provide enough power for cartridges with extreme demands.
