The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - PSN Demo Impressions
- Monday, 06 April 2009
It starts off with Riddick inside a compound filled with generic looking attack drones.Riddick is equipped with a knife and you attack using the R2 button. You rotate a weapon wheel with the R1 button to select your weapons.Right away Riddick:Assault on Dark Athena feels lacking in any original concepts or interesting new weapons;I know this was just a demo but demos usually contain some wow factor.Anyway your tasked with escaping this gigantic prison and you receive orders from your CO.Then your transmission is interrupted with a hacker, following a conversation with your enemy, but the lines are so cheesy and cliched that you feel like you're watching 1998 style gameplay blended with 1980 style scripts. You progress in the demo by defeating drones and using them as body shields and you use basic melee moves with your knife to stab enemy soldiers. You pick an assault rifle as well as you clear a few rooms of poor AI guards with colorful lines like "F*** You" or my favorite one "Motherf***er".Hahahahaha....anyway the demo ends right away and was shorter than most demos nowadays.
The graphics are decent but its obvious that Resident Evil 5,Killzone 2 and Gears of War 2 have really stepped up the graphics bar which Riddick:Dark Athena falls short. This came be blamed on the delays which have affected the game in so many ways.Hopefully the final product has a more polished graphics engine.I am somewhat disappointed by Starbreeze Studios and their latest project.Whether they can have their own unique IP to show off their own ideas remains to be seen. For now judging from the lackluster demo, the final build of Chronicles of Riddick:Dark Athena seems outdated and late to the party.
