Colin McRae Dirt 2 Demo Impressions
- Wednesday, 09 September 2009
The demo starts off in a trailer van with some furniture strewn around. However your trailer features your options from controls/sound to online play, single player, and walking outside to watch the fans coming to the rally races. You go to the online races or the single player races and they have the same two courses and cars so don't think too much on choosing between the two. You start right off with a buggy truck or a Mitsubishi Rally car in two locations, Morrocco or baja Caifornia.
The Morrocco track is curved and narrow so make your turns as sharp as possible. You wipe out once and your opponents will leave you in their dust right away. Small jagged rocks also impede your progress if you get a little lazy or sloppy so you have constantly have to be alert for any mishaps. The two tracks were typical dirt and desert with the California track having some water in it to slow you down if you made your turns to late and the Morrocco track having some houses in the middle.
The game had no really outstanding qualities right away and seemed much more focused on the rally racing culture rather than showing off the improvements to the racing itself like car tuning or a tutorial to sample more of the difficult rally techniques. On the other hand the music was fantastic , very modern yet fitting for the rally culture. The sound effects of the engines really stood out as well sounding authentic and somewhat imtimidating.
As for the graphics, its not the top dog like other upcoming racers yet easily looks a hot title for the Fall. The demo had some experience points system you could rack up in the online portion yet it was never detailed what they do and they did not unlock anything else in the demo. Keep an eye on this one for you might enjoy it immensely if the Rally tracks are calling for you.
