Microsoft v. Sony - Marketing
- Monday, 12 October 2009
I'm not going to rag on Sony for not having good games because they have alot of really great games. The only problem is that unless your an hardcore gamer you've more than likely not heard of, seen, or played any of these stellar titles.
Even the commercials that Sony releases cannot live up to the trailers or commercials that Microsoft puts on display. Killzone 2 is a phenomanal game, but compare it's 10 second tv spot to the "This Will End" commercial for Gears Of War 2, or any of the tv spots for Halo 3. Sony needs to play catch up and they need to grow wings.
Like it or not, or even whether the game deserves it or not marketing=sales. That's the way it works people. Without proper marketing a game will more than likely never reach it's full potential. Never. Take this example for instance Uncharted 2 is currently perched at the number two spot on metacritic right below GTA 4 it's the highest rated exclusive to date on ANY console, but it's all but guaranteed that it wont even put a dent in Halo3 or Gears of War 2's sales. It will never hit that high of a mark.
Even with the PS3 Slim releasing, and the drop to $299 Sony is still in trouble. Given the fact that the Xbox 360's only notable exclusive to release this year was Halo3:ODST, and sony had several exclusives that released and met with media praise Sony's game sale's aren't even close to ODST's. It's very troubling to see great games not get the CONSUMER recognition they deserve.
All this is because Sony isn't backing their titles the way they can, the way they should, and the way Microsoft DOES. Although, Uncharted 2 seems to be fairing alittle better with Sony releasing the"Dear Playstation" ad we're still only talking about a mere 32 second promo.Only time will tell if Sony is willing to put their money were their mouth is. Until then we'll just be forced to wish upon a star.
