Calling Sony Out
- Tuesday, 13 October 2009
Do not get me wrong I love single player games, in fact I'm having a blast with Uncharted 2, but I cannot help but say Sony needs to take a page out of Microsofts play book.
Where are all the co-op games? I know Uncharted 2 has online co-op, but I'm talking about local. Does any truely great story-based co-op games that Sony has released come to your mind either?(Haze doesn't count I said great)The short easy answer is, no.
Killzone 2 seemed tailor made for co-op. I'm betting if it had co-op it would have sold much better. After I purchased it I sat patiently waiting for a patch that would allow it or even just let me play skirmish mode with a buddy, but alas no patch came. That is Sony's major problem. I know that they aren't the ones actually developing these games, but they need to push studios to include co-op, after all this is next gen, correct? Most exclusives for the xbox 360 include this feature, and I know I'm not the only one waiting to see how Sony handles itself. It's a fact co-op games sell better.

Is it all that wrong for gamers to want to play with a friend through a great story or even just play play with a buddy on the same television? You tell me...

While you are at the taking something off someones pages, can you pls really look hard at what sony has brought this year and and what it brings to the table in general?
Look at the games you mentioned. At least they brought those games this year. Look at their last year line-up too. Then compare that to what the 360 or wii has brought this years and last.
I would rather have more games.true but i dont think adding in a bit of co-op *whenever possible* would cause major delays

This is one of the biggest reasons my ps3 doesn't get much playing time. It's hard for me to want to fork out the money for a new game if I can't even play it with my friends and family. Even if ODST was short, it was worth it to me cause of entertainment it and playing with my brothers brings. It's just not in me to sit down and play a game by myself anymore.

I say leave this topic alone. Fanboys have ruined enough already. Leave the co-op games to co-op and SINGLE player games as they are. By a box of tissues and get over it. Or u can maybe get a date or a friend because if ur sitting alone in the first place then who's gonna play with u anyways?

Sorry, but if you're going to call anybody out, do not pick a specific console. Instead, pick the gaming industry. Want local party games? Purchase yoruself a Wii.
Also, in the same breath, why did you not "Call Microsoft out"? Oh, i forgot, because, "that is Sony's major problem. I know that they aren't the ones actually developing these games, but they need to push studios to include co-op, after all this is next gen, correct?"
Again, not Sony's. The game industry. But i understand why articles have titles like this. Hits.

Wow, you guys make it seem terrible to include co-op. And I believe it is PS3 specific, because I own only a PS3, and my best friend owns a 360. We always play his 360 more, because of the lack of co-op games on my PS3. I'd argue that my games are better, with all my blockbuster single player games, but playing together is a lot of fun. Also, to anyone saying that local co-op is the past, you're just wrong. Of course it's fun to be able to play online, but then your not really experiencing that time with them, but in a way, their character. My view may also be a little bias though, as almost all my friends have a 360, so I can only play local with them.

are you missing something or has little big planet not registered in your brain it has one of the best (and funny) co-op modes available in any game. Put your fps down and try something a bit different for a change (and also very addictive once you start creating your own levels)

LittleBigPlanet - that was a great PS3 exclusive that featured local co - op. I know it's not the same thing but it still counts.

Actually, I would have to disagree with you on this. I don't think that, for games like KZ2, that local co-op would be a good idea. The split-screen would be kind of distracting and you would know what the other guy was trying to do. For racing games, maybe, but for FPSs, I would think that LAN connections on the PC work better on local co-op (a*suming you have more than one computer where you are).
That and with the way everyone in the MSM finds things to b*tch about in ANY PS3 exclusive no matter HOW great it is because they have an unfounded hard bias against Sony, it's hard to read this and not think that this is one of those times, sorry to say. It's a shame that the idiots like Kotaku and Analoghype are making it hard for those on sites like this to actually have a legit critique on the PS3 and not be looked at to be biased against Sony.

Co-Op is a really big thing for me and my brother, we are of about the same age and ever since we got a sega genesis we have been playing splitscreen Co-Op or split screen competative games.. It really sucks without them because what are we going to do? Go and buy another $300 playstation and then another tv to plug it into and then another game of the same thing?! I don't think fun things are supposed to work that way... This is the main reason I play xbox, sadly. I love Playstation 3, but Xbox 360 has it beat in co-op..

I would have to say that, aside from sports games which are neigh identical between xbox and playstation, little big planet is the only realy blockbuster co-op game out there for ps3. Is it good? Absolutely, fantastic even, and at its best in co-op mode online or off, but as a ps3 owner (and non xbox owner) I have to say this is where I find the catalog selection lacking.

It's funny because most Xbox fans will say that paying $50 a year for live is the best thing in the world because you can find a multiplayer game anytime of the day. Yet, they are now complaining that the PS3 doesn't have many LOCAL co-op games.
Hmmm. PSN is free and I can play multiplayer with EVERY friends I have on my list since they are ALL on PSN since it's free. (on the Xbox, it's quite common to have friends who cannot afford the extra online fee.)
When friends come over, I rather take out Motorstom Pacific Rift and have a riot, since being a racing game, it's way more forgiven for those friends who don't spend 20 hours per week gaming. Everybody will enjoy a racing game and nobody will sit out.
As said in the article itself, in a co-op shooter, usually the owner is good, and the other one is simply tagging along and enjoying the show. Heck, even Resistance 2 is a good example. Your "side kick" can simply hold a shield, and all he has to do is not die until you respawn. Finding two friends or brothers who have similar skills is not exactly common... Yes it super awesome when it does happen, but how often???

I really agree that local co-op and split screen improve a game drastically. Plus it helps get word of mouth out to friends who then go buy it increasing sales = more profit for developers. Don't get me wrong these are all great games, but adding the option for local co-op could only make them even better.

Pick up Resistance 2. Best co-op I've played in a game in over a year. That shit is just plain nuts.

one question i have been asking since the day i bought my ps3.
sony, i have one question for ya.
what is the point of being able to have 7 controllers connected to the system at once, if theres barely any games that let you have 2 let alone 7?
out of all the games i have bought resistance and rainbow six vegas are the only games that support co-op.
2 out of the hundreds i have bought, now thats PATHETIC!

What's up with all these thumbs down against local co op games? Who actually wants to play with random strangers than their friends?
I do agree that the blame is not to be toward Sony only, the industry in general is doing this. I was really pissed off when I realized I could play with my friends with local co op in Saints Row 2.
