Earth Defense Force 2025 (PS3/360) Review

It’s been a number of years since Earth Defense Force 2025 was released on the PS3. I had the pleasure of reviewing its PS3 predecessor, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, which I had a great experience playing. Even a few years later, I still have fond memories of this series. Does 2025 recapture the magic of its predecessor or is it unable to stand on its own?

There are so many various enemy types in 2025. I can somewhat recall that Insect Armageddon had between 5 to 15 different enemy types. It seems that the sheer amount of enemies in 2025 has been doubled or tripled....I dare say even more, than Insect Armageddon. One look at the videos and trailers shows you a wide variety of enemy types; godlizza, robots, spaceships, bugs...and any other enemy type I did not mention.

In my review of Insect Armageddon, I stated that:

"The graphics are perfect for this game. It feels a bit like arcade style and I have no issues with it. I think the game would have been worse off if the graphics were more realistic."

I really enjoy that 2025 does not have "arcade style" graphics but console worthy graphics. All the various enemies, whoever knows how many enemy types there actually are, to playable character classes to world destruction are just killer. I am not saying anything against the graphics in Insect Armageddon but just want to mention that both games use their graphics accordingly.

However, often there are quite big and noticeable dips in graphics. I also think that Insect Armageddon looked better than 2025, and 2025 does have graphics "crashes." As in, if there is too much happening on screen, the game is not able to handle it properly.

When playing Insect Armageddon, I thought that the 4 player classes where well designed and balanced between weapon use and mobility. In 2025, the various classes have been improved even more...I do not know how they did it but they did. The various classes are Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider and Fencer. The Ranger is a generalist and is able to use most weapons.

The other 3 classes are specialized, begin with the all female Wing Divers that are able to use the sky to their advantage. The Air Raider is a support class, which is able to provide aid to other players. The raider is able to call mortar support, health restore pods and both vehicle and weapon drops. Finally, the Fencer is the tank class who is able to take a great deal of damage while at the same time, dish it out to the enemy.

I was also amazed at the other areas that have improved in 2025. Besides graphics and enemy types, some other areas that have improved are in vehicles, weapons and multiplayer. I truly enjoy using the vehicles and there are various types, which make it nearly impossible to get tired of the vehicles. As with the vehicles, there are countless weapons available and most are enjoyable to use.

In regards to multiplayer, to play story mode, I suggest that you play it online. I really find that playing 2025 online is requirement because playing with the bad. I do not feel that the AI's do anything and that real players makes the game that more enjoyable.

Overall, 2025 is a great game that allows you kill countless bugs a number of different ways. The biggest issue I have with 2025 is that the graphics often "crash." I also feel that the AI is very lacking, which means you need to play online with other people. However, I think the game becomes just that more rewarding when played with others. 2025 is a great game to play but I think it’s worth a rental.
