Modern Warfare 2 (PS3/360/PC)
- Friday, 13 November 2009
What I was most anxious for was the single player campaign. The first game still holds a spot on my top 5 best levels from any video game (ALL GHILLIED UP) in history. I was home by 12:45. I plopped down on my sofa, and booted up what I thought would be one of the most epic campaigns I had ever played, but boy was I wrong.
I’m not saying it’s a horrible campaign it’s just not very good. The plot feels old, but if it had just been a recycled good story I could have lived with it, but the fact is; it feels childish and stupid. Had Infinity Ward not put so many great set pieces into the campaign it would have absolutely no redeeming qualities. Especially when I finished it in less than 5 hours, come on shouldn’t this be 40.00 bucks instead definitely went through my head more than once.
The story takes so many twists and turns that you'll be very confused by the plot, and will be left wondering what's going on. It's actually alot easier to skip the breifings and just go straight in and shoot the place up, and if you enjoy that type of thing you wont be left wanting. I for one wish I had just done that, because this guy is good , but now he's bad, and this guy is bad but now he's helping you plot literally made my head hurt.
The sound on the other hand is phenomanal, Hans Zimmer did a great job with the musical atmophere for this game; it actually sounds intense and epic just like many of the set pieces in the game. The weapons sound realistic and the sounds of explosions actually make you feel like your in hell with fire raining from above, and in most cases in this game that's exactly what's happening.
This game looks good dont get me wrong, but just like the unreal engine Infinity Wards engine is loosing some ground as well. It's not that it looks bad because it doesn't it just looks very average at best. After seeing some of the other blockbuster titles that have released this year its just not very impressive. Not like it was in Modern Warfare 1 anyway.
The multiplayer and Spec Ops luckily fair a lot better than the single player. The multiplayer is just like the first but with added load outs, kill streaks, and weapons. The new maps aren't bad, but maybe it’s just me but I thought the maps in the first were better. Regardless, MW2 is a force to be reckoned with online, and I can honestly say that I have never played an online game this intense , at least not yet (got the beta key for bad company 2 though) Infinity Ward shows off their true online prowess, but perhaps that’s where they should stay from here. If you don’t have online or don’t like online there’s no way I can recommend this game; it’s a renter. If however you’ve been waiting for the next great online experience this will quench your thirst, and it was a nice addition to be able to level up offline as well, but in all honesty I must say if you’re looking for a game that has the whole package you’re looking at the wrong game. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is much more worthy of your hard earned money.
This game took me the longest to come up with a numerical score than anything I've ever played. The campaign is average at best. The graphics fair about the same, but darn it the online is just so good you cant really dislike it without loving it at the same time. Where Infinity Ward goes from here is anyones guess, but I must say if the campaign for Modern Warfare 2 is any indication of what is to come maybe Infinity Ward should just cut the campaign out of future games, and just stick to what they do better than anyone else; online play.
GRAPHICS 8.5/10
SOUND 10/10
MULTIPLAYER 9/10
SINGLEPLAYER 6.5/10
OVERALL 8.5/10
